EPA RECOGNIZES MAGIC VALLEY EC

AS 2012 ENERGY STAR® PARTNER OF THE YEAR IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM DELIVERY

Magic Valley Electric Cooperative earns award for protecting the environment throughenergy efficiency.

Mercedes, TX – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Magic Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) with a 2012 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for its outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by delivering information and services to its customers to increase energy efficiency. MVEC’s accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 15, 2012, which marks the 20th anniversary of ENERGY STAR.

MVEC, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2009, is being honored for their work to increase market share of energy-efficient ENERGY STAR qualified homes through comprehensive outreach, education and marketing programs.

Over the past 20 years, American families and businesses have saved nearly $230 billion on utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to those from more than 350 million vehicles with help from ENERGY STAR.

“MVEC is committed to working in partnership with ENERGY STAR to help our customers learn more about energy efficiency,” said John Herrera, General Manager. “By using energy-efficient ENERGY STAR programs, our members can save money and energy while they address climate change.”

The ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards for Energy Efficiency Program Delivery are given to a variety of organizations in recognition of their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from about 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

“As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ENERGY STAR program, EPA is proud to recognize MVEC with the 2012 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for Energy Efficiency Program Delivery,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. MVEC and all our ENERGY STAR award winners are helping Americans find cost-effective ways to save energy in everything we do, which is good for our climate, our health, and our future.”

April 2011 will long be remembered in Texas for its hot and dangerously dry and windy weather. More than1million acres of Texas had already been scorched by wildfires when the members of Magic Valley Electric Cooperative gathered for their annual meeting April 18, and the sky was dauntingly hazy from far-away blazes still burning in parts of Texas and Mexico. Luckily for Rio Grande Valley residents, their corner of Texas remained unscathed. The MVEC system continues to grow. Last year, the co-op added approximately 2,000 new member-owners to the system. This system expansion is monitored by South Texas Electric Cooperative (STEC), which is MVEC’s collective generation and transmission co-op. The theme of the 2011 annual meeting was “Be Proud of Your Cooperative” and featured videos showing why members should be glad that they are a part of MVEC.

It wouldn’t be an annual meeting without a few door prizes. After an array of prizes such as $100 bill credits, oversized coolers and even an HDTV/Blu-Ray player, only one member could win the granddaddy of them all: a 1999 MODEL pick-up truck. Member Maria Gamez of San Juan, TX was the luckiest one of them all. After the grand prizewinner was announced, the book closed on another successful MVEC annual meeting.

DON’T BLOW OFF HURRICANES

Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc. has implemented its Emergency Restoration Plan effective Tuesday, June 29th. Event reporting will be one of our top priorities, not only to the Public Utility Commission, but also to the Local Disaster Operation Centers and the local news media. We will be providing daily restoration updates for the MVEC service area. If you have any questions please feel to contact me.

Any time a hurricane approaches the Texas coast, you’re likely to be reminded to take precautions. But the time for planning should begin well before hurricane season arrives.

Follow these tips to prepare yourself and your home for hurricanes:

Develop a plan for installing covers for windows.

Remove weak and dead trees and tree limbs on your property.

Know whether your home is in a zone that could be flooded.

Have a “grab and run” bag ready with important papers (like your homeowner’s insurance policy) and prescription medicines in the event you have to evacuate.

Have a plan in place for where you will go if you evacuate, the route you will take, and how others can contact you.

Have a survival kit ready with nonperishable food, water, a first-aid kit and other things you may need.

Keep a battery-powered radio handy. And don’t forget the extra batteries.

Don’t hesitate to evacuate, especially if you are living in a manufactured home or a house that may not be sturdy enough to stand up to the wind.

Do not touch or move downed utility lines. Even if the line looks “dead,” do not touch it and make sure others stay clear of the line. Call your electric co-op immediately.

If you use a standby generator, make sure you have all required safety equipment properly installed.

Keep this information readily available in case of the threat of a hurricane.

This public service message is brought to you by Magic Valley Electric Cooperative.
